Shimpei Takeda
Shimpei Takeda is a New York-based artist working with photographic materials. He primarily focuses on cameraless photographic techniques to capture otherwise unseen interactions of materials and light. As the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster occurred within 40 miles of his family’s residence, Takeda began working on his current project “Trace – cameraless records of radioactive contamination”. Radiation in the contaminated soil exposes photographic materials as a direct and physical documentation of the disaster.
福島県須賀川市生まれ。2002年よりニューヨーク在住。写真と映像を使った作品を制作。近年は、カメラを使わずに被写体を印画紙やフィルムの上において露光させるフォトグラムによる写真作品を中心に展開。銀塩感光材が可視光線だけでなく放射線でも感光する特徴を生かし、福島第一原発事故による汚染土壌を使って、放射線の痕跡を感光材に直に焼き付けた「痕」シリーズを制作中。
